I'd love to hear from anyone that was aboard durning "Nam" from 1966 to Nov 1968 when I was discharged. I was an ET. Chief Fred Bryant was our Div Chief.

Many memories. I'd love to see more pictures. I have lots of slides, but need to get them converted to JPEG.

Lot's of guys missing from this roster. Hope more will show up as time goes by.

served on the Mt Mac with TACRON 22 during a Med cruise in the early sixties. Also served on the Taconic and the Pocono on two other Med cruises so unsure on dates, mostly fall and winters. Active duty from 5/9/59 to 6/ll/63. As a radionman remember the vastness of radio shack. Learned later that a treaty was signed on the quarterdeck. Wish had known I was on sacred decking. Clark RM2 Tacron 22. God bless America and its men & women safeguarding our freedom.

I was on the Mac from 1957 to 1959 I was an RM2,
I made two med cruises and the trip to Portsmouth
I thought I was going to go in with the marines in
Beirut during the uprising but the beachmasters came
at the last minute and I didn't have to go.
The Mac was turned over to some kind of merchant
facility I understand. Oh yeah I would love to spend one
day aboard, chow, movies, gunnery practice, swim call.
Loved it all..........

This is in response to the entry by Signalman Ken Uhlir.
I was aboard the McKinley the same time as you. And I used to hang out with a few Signalmen on ship. I was an ET and worked on the 06 level in the Radar room a lot. One of the Signalmen taught me the alphabet and I still remember most of it. But I cannot remember his name. I used to like to walk out on the catwalk a lot. I also remember those storms on the way to Barcelona and I took some pictures from the catwalk. That is, when I wasn't getting knocked on my ass. I also remember going to the Flick during the storm and we'd all go sliding in a bunch. One of my memories is when there was a Barbecue going on and I went to get in line. I never realized how many guys were on that ship until then. It took a while to find the end of the chow line.
Well, enough. I hope you have a chance to read this.

This is in response to the sea story by Lee Temanson.
I reported aboard the Mt. McKinley in Naples in Nov 61.
The Chilton sounds vaguely familiar but I can't recall the collision with it. I do remember the trip to Malta and a few heavy storms during my stay from the end of 61 to the
start of 63. Captain Laureman sounds familiar but I remember Captain Schwab in particular. He was great at keeping all hands informed. I believe Schwab succeeded Laureman.

I have enjoyed entering the pictures and remembering the last tour of the Mt. McKinley. I will have more pictures when I get the slides converted to pictures that I can scan.

Everyone on the last tour may remember the shellback initiation, the air freight, refueling and places to just unwind. Without the pictures the memories were almost forgotten.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

My favorite sea story is our in-port collision in Naples- November 1961. We were med-moored along the Chilton and the rest of our six ship squadron. A very strong wind came up from seaward and the APA Chilton pulled a bollard out of the pier. She swong loose and her stern hit the ship to her port and her bow struck us amidships on our port side putting a hole in our side above the water line. We had boats in the water and I think we also broke loose from our mooring. What a mess. Anyway, we had to go into the Royal shipyard in Malta for repairs. That was a lot more fun than another amphib exercise. Anyone else remember that night in Naples? I always need a blackboard to describe the sequence.
I also remember the storm off the Balleric Islands in 61-62. I was one of the OOD's and Captain Lauerman's basic instruction was "keep your bow into the sea". Good words of advice.

I was aboard the USS Mt McKinley AGC-7 from June 1953 to April 1954. I was assigned to Communications (Crypto). We operated out of Yokosuka, Japan, and patrolled along the Korean coast, stopping at Pusan and Inchon. We also took part in Operation Flaghoist, an Amphibious Operatation, landing in Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Our Skipper was CAPT Hardin, and we often had flag officers on board while at sea. In 1954, I left the ship and went to Flight School in Pensacola, Florida.

I was on the USS Mt.McKinley AGC7 from January 1952 until February 1953 when we returned to the States from WesPac and Korea.
I was an RM2 and the last 6 months or so was the C Division Petty Officer.
I went on to become a CT1 in The Naval Security Group, and was stationed in Japan the last 3 years of my Navy carrer.
There are a few messages on here, at least one, where I can contribute some answers, and will do so later.
Unfortunately, that was so long ago, and since I wasn't on the ship that long, I don't remember people's names although several of their faces are clear in my mind.
I hope somebody remembers me. It sure would be fun to talk to anyone about those days.
I am now 70 years old and a retired Computer Engineering Project Manager.
Thanks.

I was surprised to find a web site for the Mt. McKinley. I was only on this ship for a few months in 1956. I was the legal yeoman for a Marine Capt. Rod Stewart. I knew and worked with most of the Marine detachment. The ship went from Hawaii to the Pacific for H bomb tests then back to San Diego. We then went back through the Panama Canal to Norfolk Va.. The Capt. was H. A. Rankin and the Exec was Ltcdr Betzer. I remember Lt. Starbuck was the navigator. I had many friends in the Capt's office Don Schwankel, Bob Schupman, Fultan Mather. We were all drafted in the Navy in 1955. I tried to remember the Ensign we reported to but couldn't think of his name.

Served on board at the Phila. Navy Yd. as original Ship's Company in '44-'45 (18 Mo.s)with the US Army 7th Signal Detachment. Was a Sgt. Cryptographer. Was on board for Shake-down Cruises and initial voyage thru the Panama Canal to Pearl Harbor, thence to Guadalcanal and the Russell Islands, where we saw Bob Hope and Jerry Colonna, and on to Phillipines, (Leyte Gulf-Tacloban, Lingayen Gulf, Subic Bay), thence to Peleliu (sp?) and Anguar (sp?), thence to Okinawa and back to USA for refitting for return & Japan invasion which of course never happened--thank God!
The only time I attended a Reunion I was ridiculed by some our good ole boys from the South for being a Yankee Army man and felt distinctly "outside". But,they were "Peacetimers" and I took no offense because I know that the real sailors wouldn't have behaved like that in front of my wife who was back home waiting for me when I served during WWII and attended the Reunion with me. We haven't been back.
I would like to get in touch via E-Mail with somebody who was in my Army Detachment during WWII or anybody who remembers us. I am connected with Lucien J. Hockman, Lt, US Army, but it is pretty lonesome for us, there being only two of us.
My congratulations and grateful thanks, to you shipmates who are making-up this Web Site, for all the work you have done and continue to do. Please keep it going!

I visited your site,as my father served aboard the USS Mt. McKinley during 1946. I was looking for information about the ship and its history. I was fortunate enough to have the opportuntity to serve the Gator Navy 31 years later as a radarman aboard the USS Washtenaw County (LST 1166), and continue our family naval service with the proud Brown Water Navy. I hope this will lead me further in my search about the ships he served on during WW II and following the surrender of Japan.

My father, Robert Bryant (Bob) was on the McKinley from 44-46 and was the radio man. Dad died in 1998 and he never discussed his time in the navy. Mom still has many of dad's photos aboard ship that I will in the future submit to the web site. I was hoping someone stationed with dad could write and let me know what occured the years dad was on board.

My dad, Virgil Sisk, was chief petty officer - photo lab - aboard USS Mt.McKinley during part of WWII. He always talked of going to one of the reunions, but never made it.
I still have one of his trunks and, being in charge of the photo lab, it has many photos (probably hundreds) taken during his time on board. From pictures of Bob Hope, arial surviellance, captain on deck, guys on shore leave, etc., there is a little bit of everything. He told me he even made picture Christmas Cards for some of the guys to send home to their families. Where will the 2002 reunion be held?
I might like to drag out the trunk, take another look at what's there and show up at the reunion -- if that's ok.

Just reviewed a copy of the Master Rooster. It is one fine job that deserves a hearty WELL DONE.

Found the names of old Shipmates and would appreciate a return message if any one knows anything about these people:

BILL FORBES, QMC.. Bill left the ship and went to recruiting duty on Long Island, NY.

E.J. SASS, RMC. Last met SASS in Newport, Rhode Island abooard the USS YOSEMITE, he then transferred to duty in Panama.

William Parker, DTC. Bill helped me get dental work for my wife done aboard the ship when I couldn't afford civilian services, and of course, like the other Chiefs listed here I lost track of him when I transferred to Portland, Maine.

Any info on the Shipmates would really be nice.

I went to theMT MCKINLEY FROM THE USS WASHBURN, WHAT A SHOCK THE FIRST TIME I MET AN ADMIRAL.
This is the best web site that I have visited.

great gq sound. i was mount officer on the five inch gun for gq station and everytime the dam thing fired i thought my fillings were popping out, eardrums popping, and eyes bulging out. that thing had a wwII distance radar that i dont think ever worked. of course, the whole ship was esentially wwII vintage. remember the great pieces in the armory-bars, thompsons etc.
